"ELUSIVE ONE!"
©2001 HoneyRock Publishing For 5 Percussionists Grade: Medium (III) Composed & Arranged by: Steve Pemberton Elusive One! is a 4½ minute exploration into the subtleties of the sounds of both metal (Triangle, Finger Cymbals) and wood (Hi/Low Claves, Castanets). Each percussion part is equally important, but the piece is grounded by the introductory theme, which is then repeated toward the end of the piece. Even though the whole piece is written and conducted in four, you will hear the mesmerizing interplay of many different time feels throughout the piece. This can present a challenge for the players, who must maintain focus and concentration so they do not get disoriented with the various implied time feels. The piece starts out soft, with just the sound of the Hi Claves, crescendos to a peak at bars 43-45, and finishes again softly with just the sound of the Hi Clave. The total package comes with 1 bound score, 1 Triangle, 1 Finger Cymbal, 1 Hi Clave, 1 Low Clave and 1 Castanets. All parts are on heavy stock, 8 1/2 x 11. |
"SPRING WALTZ"
©2001 HoneyRock Publishing For 3 Vibraphones Grade: Medium (III) Composed & Arranged by: Steve Pemberton "Spring Waltz" is a 2½-minute melodic exploration that's perfect as a "filler" or encore piece. It's light and lyrical, moving along swiftly with a jazz waltz feel. All three players should be familiar with "jazz eighth notes" (triplet feel) as opposed to traditional straight eighth notes. Both styles are utilized in this piece. |
"THE BACK DOOR"

Optional improvised solo sections are scattered throughout to give the players an opportunity to stretch their creative wings. The total package comes with 1 bound score, 3 vibe, 3 marimba, 3 percussion, 1 drumset, 1 optional piano and 1 optional bass parts. All parts are on heavy stock, 8 1/2 x 11. |
*****
"The Back Door is not only a great piece with plenty of groove, but is a tremendous teaching tool for both mallet players and percussionists. I premiered the piece with the Interlochen Arts Camp percussion ensemble this summer (2000), and the students and audience loved it. The middle 7/8 section is a study in rhythmic accuracy and a challenge for the drumset soloist and hand drum specialist. Pemberton's writing is idiomatic for all the instruments, in particular, his percussion writing is well thought out and tasteful. I highly recommend this piece for any advanced High School or College percussion ensemble." -Keith Aleo, Director of Percussion, Interlochen Arts Camp ***** |
"ODD-O-MAN"
©2000 HoneyRock Publishing For 10 Piece Percussion Ensemble The Podiatrist's Repose "Since ya can't dance to it, sit down and put your feet up" Grade: Med Advanced (IV) Composed & Arranged by: Steve Pemberton "Odd-O-Man" is an exciting new original piece that is both a challenge for the performers and the conductor. It is an excellent teaching tool for any college or high school director. It requires rhythmic precision, rudimental technique, jazz technique, improvisatory skills, mastery of odd time signatures and polyrhythms. It features time signatures in 4/4, 15/16, 7/8 and 6/8, but flows nicely and makes total musical sense. It's a fun and energetic piece in a contemporary style that is a real crowd pleaser. The total package includes 1 bound score, 3 vibe, 3 marimba, 3 percussion and 1 drumset part. All parts are on heavy stock, 8 1/2 x 11. |
